Five Four Reality Show

This isn’t the first, second or third, and probably won’t be the last time you see The Five Four Reality Show on BavuBlogs.

When we launched this page, there was a Five Four Reality Show feed in the right column. I left Texas, streamlined the page and all. But fam is phayum. Needless to say, Crew54 is fam.

Speaking of fam, I’m actually in this video because the homie MattSoReal had a birthday party hours after I got in town and blahblahblah watch the video.

Oh, and speaking of fam, at around the 2:55 mark of this video I’m performing to the Grupo Fantasma horn section plus Adrian Quesada on guitar. Congrats to them for winning a Grammy independently for their latest album El Existential.

These guys are bad, though. It’s such an honor and educational experience to know them, hear them, talk to them and play with them. The above photo is from the Music Lab on Oltorf in Austin, TX, on Sunday, January 16, 2011.

A week prior, I caught them playing a jazz set in downtown Fort Worth with a mind-blowing organist named Bobby Sparks and the homie Philippe Vieux on flute.

All that to say, make sure you check in or subscribe in February.

Thanks in advance,
Bavu

How Are You Enduring?

“Tell ’em I’m doing fine / Tell ’em I’m doing great / They remember the Mister / Now it’s Minister Blakes / Tell ’em I’m doing fine as my fourth week in ’08…”

I went to Austin for three days and three nights, during which I got a haircut from Delton on Pecan Street, checked on the house, played Matt‘s bday party (video below), caught up with D and Willette, reconnected with the Extra Plairs to rock the MLK Day Fest at Huston-Tillotson, and recorded a new project with producer Reggie Coby of the League of Extraordinary G’z. That’s a short list, but you get the idea…

Dance Sucka x MTV

blacklisted

I’ve referred to Da’Shade Moonbeam (pictured above, right) on this site as one of the most talented Texans ever. His spoken word, capoiera, emceeing and energy are all ridiculoso. His rap group, Blacklisted Individuals (Da’Shade and Snyp) is one of my few personal favorites in Austin Texas.

In a glimmer of social justice, MTV agrees and has named them this week’s Needle In The Haystack. I ran into Snyp at the barbershop once and asked him for some new music, and “Dance Sucka” is the same tune he sent me that next day. I used to spin it on Bavu’s Revue at The Soul of Austin. I’m glad it’s going further, because it is ironically the same type of song as my own “On the Cool“.

Given what is commonly said about great minds, I must have one! Right now I’ve got a mind to also suggest that you google Gidon the Mighty Warrior as well.

Conquering New Territory

Settling in to this Long Beach, Cali, lifestyle. That means some good stuff is coming to BavuBlogs.com as soon as possible. As usual, we’ll keep bringing you bits of music, culture, lifestyle and experience on the blogs.

Hung out with the first guy kind enough to extend his hand out here homie Aloe Blacc and his lady Maya Jupiter on a video shoot over the weekend. More on that later…

Meanwhile, back in the homeland, it’s the week of South by Southwest 2010 and spring break at UT. I’m missing it all for the first time in at least half your lifetime, but I’m at peace with it for sure. In fact, I just found a small feature that sums up where I am.

“There is no name more synonymous with Austin hip-hop than Bavu Blakes. Talk to just about any hip-hop artist in Central Texas and odds are they are aware of the enigmatic emcee. For 15 years prior to an impending move exodus to Los Angeles Long Beach, Blakes has made Austin his home and worked tirelessly to bridge the gaps in the diverse music scene.”
